Photo exhibition: September 11 / Artists at the World Trade Center
The exhibition opened on September 2nd 2002 in the International Press Centre Nieuwspoort in The Hague. The exhibition showed some twenty photographs of the artists’ studios in the WTC New York, made by Nicole Carstens, who died just a few months before 9/11. The artists transformed the temporarily vacant office spaces into creative laboratories. Nicole Carstens photographic style is unadorned and direct. At first glance the pictures seem to have been taken carelessly, but when looked at more closely they grow more and more fascinating because of the way they capture precisely the feeling of a moment. She was unaware of the historic value these specific pictures were going to obtain only a short time later. The series is an intriguing document of artistic life in New York in its own right, even without the added poignancy since 9/11.
